Essence

How do we experience each other differently when we’re each connected to our core essence, rather than clouded by defensiveness and doubt?

This week, I’m at an energy mastery class outside Boston, learning about connecting to your core essence—the energy within each of us when it’s grounded and unclouded by doubt, negativity, or anxiety—and how it transforms the way we experience each other.

Yes, you heard me right – I’m learning the basics of mastering how my energy flows, which has an impact on how I show up in the world and on my interactions with others. We are all aware of this at some level – someone from whom we get either a good or bad vibe, an instance where we felt powerfully moved by a compelling speaker, moments of intense activity or complete peace. All of these experiences have associated underlying energy flows that are noticeable, and manageable, with attention to our bodies.

I’ve learned so much in the past week – about the underlying dynamics in my relationship with R, about the energy I give off when I first meet people (I have an unconscious tendency to invade their space sometimes!), and about how to set better boundaries, energetically, for myself. I even was able to dissolve a headache during a meditation – which I would have never believed was possible before this week.

The most important lesson I’ve learned, however, is the difference in how we experience each other when we are each connected with our core essence – the energy within each of us when it is grounded and unclouded by doubt, negativity, anxiety, or other concerns. It’s hard to put into words, but this week’s poem, by Hafiz, comes close.

Perhaps one way to think of it is the beauty or good within someone when all the layers of defense have softened away. When we practice connecting to our core essence, we are able to meet our own energetic needs and hold our boundaries, so that we do not place unnecessary strain on other people.

If you have a difficult time locating this energy within yourself, perhaps you can start by recognizing it – the spirit flame, as Hafiz puts it – in someone else, helping them to see themselves in a new light.
