What might shift if you started listening for messages from the Universe in everyday conversations, even when it sounds a bit crazy?
I’ve been playing around lately with the question: “What if, every time someone speaks, they are sharing a message from the Universe?” I know it sounds a bit crazy – and no, I don’t think the barista at Starbucks who asks “What can I get you?” is necessarily passing on a message – but I do think the Universe speaks to us in many ways.
Some examples from my past week in North Carolina:
- Over dinner on Sunday evening, two colleagues mentioned that they had been to Target to purchase some last-minute items for our workshop. Having just been bemoaning (to myself) how unexpectedly cold it is here and how I didn’t pack properly, I realized I could take an Uber to Target the next morning to buy some warm tights.
- I’ve been going in circles in my mind about how to fit in more time at the gym this year – something I really need to do, and yet I am reluctant to give up my precious morning time to do so. Without knowing how present this question is for me, another colleague shared his own routine, which completely reframed how I think about this topic. I now have a plan.
- Facing some doubts about myself, I received a series of messages from people that spoke right to the heart of the matter and was exactly what I needed to hear.
You might call this all coincidence. Maybe it is. But when I listen while holding the potential this whatever another person is saying to me is a message from the Universe, I notice that I listen more closely and with more openness, and that I am far less likely to get triggered, frustrated, or impatient. Worst case scenario, I have had a very human interaction with another person. Best case scenario, I gain a new insight or possibility that I previously had not seen.
If you are feeling stuck on a question or in need of inspiration, try this out: formulate a clear thought for the Universe (i.e. “I can’t decide whether or not to leave my job” or “I’m feeling really overwhelmed right now and could use some positivity”) and then listen. Maybe the response comes from another person. Maybe it is a song that you hear on the radio or a Spotify playlist. Maybe it’s a book you see in the window of a bookstore you walk by every day. Stay open, and you may just be surprised by what comes.
