Time to exhale. R and I arrived in Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands, on Sunday, and John Lubbock’s poem below has been with me the whole week. We have been doing absolutely nothing except sitting on the beach, swimming, snorkelling, surfing and watching the clouds float by. No agenda, no itinerary, just rest. We watch the colours change in the sky and in the sea, and marvel at how rainbows form and dissipate (I took the picture you see below from our front porch yesterday morning).
Time moves much more slowly, and days are much more spacious, when you ditch your watch and abandon your schedule. As we head into the holiday season, I hope you are able to get some rest and create space as well – space to let your mind wander and soak in the beauty around you, whether that is snow falling, twinkling Christmas lights, a warm summer’s day in the southern hemisphere, or the joy of family coming together. As John Lubbock writes, rest is not idleness – it can be just what we need to soothe our weary souls.
